Going Green

By Shiv Gilmore | Digital Marketing Assistant, Holdan

‘Going Green’ is now considered less a choice and more a responsibility. But to be effective, it needs to embrace the entire supply chain. Consumers need to truly believe businesses and brands are making a conscious effort from start to finish to effect change, and not just ‘greenwashing’. Thankfully, there are various standards in place that can help you make an informed decision.

This is the moment to change the business climate, the political climate and how we act on climate change. Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods. Earth Day 2022.

Compliance

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliance has been established since 2003. It means that a product has been tested for all 10 banned substances and confirmed to be below the RoHS threshold. In addition, the company REACH is an EU initiative that requires companies to identify and manage the risks posed by chemicals.

Waste

The WEEE Directive obliges manufacturers or distributors of such equipment to take responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Certification

Issued from the Environmental Management System (EMS) the ISO 14001 are the international standard and the most widely used EMS in the world. Over 360,000 ISO 14001 certificates issued globally! Any supplier with ISO 14001 certification is taking the subject seriously.

How Brands Tackle Sustainability

Promise Technology is a leading developer of high-performance storage solutions designed for the data centre, surveillance, cloud, and rich media markets. Promise has become the preferred storage provider for the world’s top resellers and integrators.

Promise is placing environmental considerations at the heart of its business Offering green data storage solutions is a critical step to reaching net-zero targets. With demand for data continuing to rise, we need to step up our efforts to contribute to a greener world, commented Alice Chang, Chief Sales Officer, Promise Technology.

Committed to a significant proportion of their R&D spending to improving their PSU power efficiency. Innovative mechanical engineering combined with airflow optimisation has enabled their storage devices to exceed the 80 PLUS Platinum rating, achieving 91% efficiency at 100% loads.

tvONE is a world-class developer and manufacturer of video conversion and AV signal distribution technology. Is taking a similar approach to tackling environmental issues. In recent months the company has embarked on an ambitious project to eliminate 95% of all plastics in their shipping materials. Within this process, they have also reduced the amount of paper and cardboard used by reviewing their own supply chain. The components are now sourced in both Europe and North America for on-continent final assembly, reducing shipping costs.

Addressing green and climate issues with innovation is what tvONE is striving for, with modularity as a key differentiator many products can be upgraded as demand dictates, rather than sending old AV equipment to landfills.

We’re making a concerted effort to reduce environmental impact by designing high-performance equipment with low power requirements, that is modular for easy upgradability, manufactured in-house and sustainably packaged, said Mark Trevena, Communications & Training Manager. That hopefully contributes to lower lifetime running costs, fewer air miles and less landfill.

Space optimisation is also very important. The ONErack Spider is a multi-voltage DC PSU strip that optimises any installation by eliminating unreliable DC wall warts and other power clutter from the rack design – accommodating many different devices and providing reliable and efficient power to support a mix of different voltages.

Continually working to reduce power consumption not only reduces costs but also extends product life cycles - in the case of the CORIOmaster video processor, that is now up to 12 years of 24/7 operation.

Conclusion

Unless businesses act now, climate change will damage economies, increase scarcity, drain profits and job prospects and impact us all.

But we know that private sector innovation (with public support) accelerates the kind of rapid change we need. Studies show a direct correlation between sustainable business practices, share prices and business performance. Companies that develop strong Environment Social Governance (ESG) standards have better profitability, stronger financials, happier employees and more resilient stock performance.

Smart companies are discovering that it is no longer a choice between going green and growing long-term profits. So, for both, humanitarian, and business reasons, it is imperative that companies of all sizes take action and embrace the benefits of a greener economy.
