When a manufacturer subtly adds a letter to an existing product code, it’s difficult to know whether this is a mid-cycle refresh, like Sony’s FS7 MkII or a major new announcement like the Panasonic Lumix GH5S.
The Zhiyun Weebil-S fits into the ‘big news’ camp. The product information points to multiple enhancements over the previous model, but within these specifications is something special. The claimed “300%” improvement in motor torque and “50% increase” in responsiveness is proper news: it means that the latest generation of DSLR-type cameras, armed with substantial lenses can be mounted and operated on the Weebill-S. It will now support some heavy pro set-ups, like the Sony A7 III series, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, Panasonic Lumix S1 or Canon 5D Mk4 with a 24-70 F2.8 lens.
The auto-tune, auto-torque and auto-calibration tools, as well as the quick release plate, make Weebill-S exceptionally easy and fast to use. Pair this will silky smooth stabilization and complete control over stabilizer modes and you’ve got a highly effective and intuitive gimbal system.
Sometimes it takes a couple of days for it to sink in how good a new product is. There’s so much more to investigate in terms of lens control, wireless monitoring and remote management, but the basics of an affordable gimbal capable of supporting a camera kit in excess of 2Kg is a very exciting prospect.
