You get deep dynamic color range for color correction and perfect keying without jagged edges. You can also use industry standard compressed video formats that maintain incredible HD quality at reduced files sizes. With HyperDeck Studio Pro you can now push quality to new heights, with additional support for Ultra HD 4K using Apple ProRes.

Industry Standard Formats

HyperDeck Studio models gives you the choice of recording quality! You can record and play back incredible uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2, or choose from high quality ProRes 422 (HQ) or DNxHD formats. HyperDeck Studio Pro also has ProRes 422, ProRes 422 (LT) or ProRes 422 (Proxy)for longer recording. Using ProRes 422 (Proxy) you can record over 24 hours of 1080HD video on a single 480GB SSD drive! You could record for 2 days non stop before swapping SSD drives!

Important Notes About SSD Speed

Some models of SSD can’t save video data at the speed the manufacturer claims. This is due to the disk using hidden data compression to attain higher write speeds. This data compression can only save data at the manufacturer’s claimed speed when storing data such as blank data or simple files. Video data includes video noise and pixels which are more random so compression will not help, therefore revealing the true speed of the disk.

Some SSDs can have up to 50% lower write speed than the manufacturer’s claimed speed. So even though the disk specifications claim an SSD has speeds fast enough to handle video, in reality the disk isn’t fast enough when used to store video data for real time capture. However, this mostly affects HD capture and often these disks can still be used for playback.

Use Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to accurately measure whether your SSD will be able to handle uncompressed video capture and playback. Blackmagic Disk Speed Test uses data to simulate the storage of video so you get results similar to what you’ll see when capturing video to a disk. During Blackmagic testing, we have found newer, larger models of SSD and larger capacity SSDs are generally faster.

Recording PTZ Cameras

PTZ cameras are not like traditional camcorders. A few can record video internally to a Micro SD card, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. Lumens, Datavideo and the high-end Panasonic PTZ Cameras (like the AW-HE130 and AW-UE150) do not have internal recording so we must look at other options. The Panasonic AW-HE38, AW-HE40, AW-HE42, and AW-UE70 can all record HD, (the UE70 can even record in UHD). This internal recording can be very useful, but it is heavily compressed so the quality is not as good as the cameras are capable of.

New launches at ISE 2020

BLACKMAGIC DESIGN HALL 3, STAND C140 The Video Assist 12G 5” and 7” monitor recorders are now shipping. The original HD versions were incredibly popular with AV technicians who wanted to verify SDI and HDMI feeds and check waveform levels. For production teams, their 4K HDR capture makes them a superb on-camera SD card recorder. The ATEM Mini is a very small, cost-effective 4 channel HDMI video switcher with streaming output. Great as a portable mixer or a signal switcher, it’s being adopted by everyone from conference producers to AV technicians looking for simple HDMI switching.

VT is dead, long live “Roll VT”

VT or video tape is pretty much dead now. We’ve moved into digital workflows that no longer rely on tape but everyone still recognises and calls out “Roll VT”. This harks back to a time when very little in the studio gallery was integrated or automated. There was a VT operator responsible for looking after all the A and B rolls of pre-recorded video tape. The operator loaded the rolls of tape and lined  them up to a point where the tape was ready to playout the required video from the deck.

Major announcements from Blackmagic Design

Not just some new products and technical updates from Blackmagic Design. No, these are major new products and massive technical updates.

HyperDeck 3.8 now available

Product update for HyperDeck Studio and HyperDeck Studio Pro

What's new in HyperDeck Setup 8.5

This is a major update for HyperDeck Extreme models and includes the new features as described below:

  • HyperDeck Extreme 4K HDR
  • HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR

You can now use the internal M.2 SSD as network storage. There is a new setting in the menu to enable the internal M.2 flash memory card to be used and then you can select it to be used as either a record cache or as network storage. When it's used as network storage, it can be accessed by all computers on your network via the rear 10G Ethernet port.

Both HyperDeck Extreme models allow you to install an M.2 flash memory card by unscrewing a metal plate on the underside of the HyperDeck Extreme unit.

Check the manual for recommended models of M.2 card or your reseller can install an M.2 flash memory card for you. This update also has other small improvements and bug fixes.

HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR

You can now record 4 separate inputs on the HyperDeck Extreme 8K HDR model. There is a new input menu setting in the record menu that lets you select "4 x SDI" to select the 4 channel recording mode. The LCD will show a multi-view with the 4 inputs live.

This means you can use each of the 4 x 12G-SDI inputs for recording 4 separate video inputs at the same time, as long as they are the same video standard. The HyperDeck will automatically re-sync in the inputs if they are out of time. Each input can record all HD and Ultra HD video standards up to 2160p60.

Each record channel will store the media files into a separate record folder to make managing media files easer. You can also swipe to set the metadata for each channel separately, such as the camera number. That's important when doing replay. There are no new features in 8.5 for other HyperDeck models.
